CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Weeks passed like this. Marcus proved his commitment to the routine while also proving to be a skilled dancer, once he applied himself to learning the steps. He was a quick study and we were naturally in sync with each other’s rhythms.

True to his word, he did not make any more attempts to flirt with or seduce me and I gradually relaxed my guard around him. We managed to find a comfortable routine that consisted of us both focusing on the dancing while keeping up a steady flow of innocent, mindless banter on safe subjects, while ignoring the eight-ton, pink elephant in the room with us.

We were almost to the point where we could unveil our routine on stage. Once we did that our practice sessions would be shorter and happen with less frequency. That would be a relief, because it was stressful for me to forcefully keep my distance from him. But it would also be hard to deal with, because I’d come to crave the time we spent together and I now looked eagerly forward to every session and every minute we shared alone.

Outside of our practice sessions, I did my best to avoid Marcus. I tried not to distract him from his wait duties or parade my skimpy costumes in front of him while he was working. Truthfully, there was a very naughty part of me that wanted to do exactly that, which was why I avoided it. It was too dangerous, and it would be wrong for me to temp and tease him on purpose when I had no intention of ever letting him have me. I couldn’t be that viscous and cruel.

Another truth was that I didn’t like watching him turn on his charm with the customers. The way our female (and some of our male) patrons reacted to his heady blend of charisma and charm was tough to stomach. Even though I didn’t want to be that girl, I couldn’t keep jealousy from rearing its ugly head whenever I saw him flirting with customers. That is truly why I tried so hard not to notice what he was doing or pay any attention to him on the nights where we both worked.

Tonight was one of those nights.

Tonight Fiona Firestarter and I had opened the show with one of our newer dancers, the voluptuous Vicki Velour. As the most curvaceous dancers at the Burlesque we’d thought it would be a great idea to perform a number to Meghan Trainor’s ‘All About That Bass’. We wanted to do something that celebrated body positivity and emphasized that sexiness wasn’t about size, it was about working what you had with confidence and sass.

The audience loved that number, especially because our very own China Doll sang it live with our house band. They did a slinky, jazz version that was absolutely amazeballs.
